India Sports News in September 2012



The month of September had lots of sporting events this year. On our September 2012 Sports News page we will highlight the top stories for the month of September. In National news, India participated in many sporting events at national and international level. In the beginning of the month, the fifteenth edition of the Nehru Cup Football Tournament took place in New Delhi in which India won the tournament after beating Cameroon in Penalty shoot out by 5-4. In the long going fight for who will manage the hockey in India, the Special Committee recommended and submitted the decision in favor of Hockey India (HI) for managing the game. Later, Hockey India appointed Mariamma Koshy of Hockey Kerala as its new full-time President and announced Wave Group as the owner of the Delhi Franchise of Hockey India League (HIL).

In other Indian sports news, Indian boxer and 2012 London Olympic bronze medalist Mary Kom was named as the brand ambassador of Super Fight League. Her role would be to mentor the female fighters and act as an inspiration. She will also be part of the selection process. In the World Junior Championship held at Pattaya, Thailand on 6th September, 20 year old Indian grappler Indu Choudhary won a Bronze medal in the women's 44 kg category after defeating Turkish Evin Demirhan. The High jumper Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda won a silver medal in the F42 single leg, amputations minimal disability category at the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar won the Yeangder tournament players Championship in Chinese Taipei. The railways also lifted the overall Cup in 52nd National Open Athletics Championships. Indian badminton player and Olympic bronze medal winner, Saina Nehwal signed up a 40-crore deal with Rhiti Sports Management Company, making her the highest paid sportsperson outside cricket in India. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) extended the ban on Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna from the national team till 30 June 2014. Anuraag Thakur a BJP MP from Hamirpur and Abhishek Matoria, a BJP MLA from Rajasthan were elected as a member of Asian Cricket Council's (ACC's) executive board and as the President of Indian Boxing Federation, respectively.

In Cricket, India won the two matches cricket test series against New Zealand by 5 wickets on 3rd September, chasing a target of 261 set by New Zealand on the fourth day of the second and final Test in Bangalore. India chased the target in the post-tea session with one full day remaining. With this, India won the series by 2-0. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain of Indian Cricket team has been named as the Captain of ICC's ODI team of the year and the Vice-Captain, Virat Kohli was named as the ODI Cricketer of the year at ICC Awards Function held at Colombo, Sri Lanka. Former Cricketer and all-rounder, Sandeep Patil was elected as the Chairman of the five member senior selection committee of BCCI on 27 September. New Zealand's pacer Daryl Tuffey and Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden announced their retirement from all formats of Cricket.

International Sports Events in September 2012



In International news, Serena Williams of USA won the Women's Singles US Open 2012 in New York for the fourth time after defeating Victoria Azarenka the current World No.1 player. Former world number one player Caroline Wozniacki won the Korean Open WTA Title. Andy Murray became the first British man to change the 76 year old tennis history for Britain after he won the US Open Grand Slam Singles Championship by defeating Novak Djokovic. Legendary tennis player, Andy Roddick from US announced his retirement during the US open after he faced defeat from John Martin del Potro. On 12 September, "A Smiling Armadillo", was declared as the official mascot for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. John Terry, the captain of Chelsea announced his retirement from International Football. Lewis Hamilton, the driver of McLaren Team won the Italian Grand Prix 2012 and the legendary boxing Champion, Muhammad Ali was honored with the Liberty Medal in Philadelphia.
