International Sports Events in September 2011



The men's Compound archers lost in the final to USA. The team - consisting of Jignas Chittibomma, Rtan Singh Khuraijam and Chinna Raj Srither - won it's first-ever medal in the world cup series.

ATHLETICS
National Open Athletics Championships, 51st
The championships were held in Kolkata. Sadly, not one of the India's elite athletes achieved the Olympic qualifying standards. Defending champions Railways, with 17 gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze medals, kept their stranglehold over the team championship. They finished way ahead on second-placed ONGC.

BASKETBALL
Asian Championship
China defeated Jordan 70-69 to win the championship and secure a berth to the 2012 London Olympics.

CRICKET
Sri Lanka-Australia Test Series

Australia clinched the Test series 1-0 after resurgent skipper Michael Clarke led from the front to snatch a draw in the third and final Test. Australia had won the first Test by 125 runs and the second Test ended in a rain-affected draw.

England-India ODI Series
India signed off their nightmarish tour of England without a win as they lost the last ODI by six wickets and the five-match series 3-0. Captain Alastair Cook led from the front as England won the second ODI by seven wickets. The first ODI had to be abandoned due to rain. In the third ODI England defeated India by three wickets. The fourth ODI ended in a tie due to rain interruptions.

Salgaocar defeated East Bengal 3-1 to win the Federation Cup.

GOLF
Solheim Cup
Europe regained the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2003 after a dramatic 15-13 final day victory over USA.

TENNIS
US Open, 2011
Men's Singles: Djokovic battled back problems but used his superior return game, defense and speed to play with confidence to defeat the 10-time Grand Slam champion Nadal, 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1, to win his first career US Open crown and fourth Grand Slam title.

Women's Singles: Samantha Stosur stunned three-time champion Serena Williams 6-2, 603 to win the title.

  • Women's Doubles: Vania King (USA) and Yaroslava Shvedova (Kazakistan).

ARCHERY
Indian team creates history
The Indian women Recurve archers created history by becoming the world champions during the World Cup at Shanghai. The trio of Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Laishram Devi and Chekrovol Swuro defeated Italy by a huge margin of 11 points.

HOCKEY
Gurmeet Singh Memorial Trophy
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) defeated Punjab & Sind Bank 5-2 to win the tournament.

Asian Champions Trophy
India defeated Pakistan 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out to win the Asian Champions trophy. The tournament was held in Ordos, in northern China's inner Mongolia.
