Cricket
The Commonwealth Bank tri-series held in Australia, mong the three nations India, Australia and Sri Lanka, was a very interesting and competitive series. India was not able to make a mark in the series and lacked as a whole unit both with the bat and with the ball throughout the series. However, Sri Lanka managed to keep the series alive with a good come back in the second final of the best-of-three series. Though, they lost the series, but Sri Lanka fought hard in the last decisive final. Australia won the Commonwealth Bank tri-series, second time after 2005-2006. The Australian team played as they always do: with full aggression and never say die attitude; and that is why they won the Commonwealth Bank tri-series comprehensively in the end.

Hockey
After a disappointing performance of the Indian hockey team in the Beijing Qualifiers 2008, the Indian hockey team came back strongly, by performing well in the qualifiers for the 2012, London Olympics. They played very well throughout the tournament and they seem to be a very strong side this time around. No one will forget India's amazing 8-1 victory over France to enter the London Olympics. The women's hockey championship, which was held in Rosario, Argentina, was also an amazing event to watch. The Netherlands was defending their title in the 20th edition of the Women's hockey championship. The final was held between Argentina and Great Britain. Argentina won the final by 1-0.

Tennis
Dubai tennis courts witnessed some action, when Indian tennis pair of Mahesh Bhupati and Rohan Bopanna won the doubles title of Dubai Open held in February and March, 2012. The Indian pair comes at fourth place in world doubles rankings. Their opponents in doubles final were Polish Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

The excellent all round performance of the India side led to their debut title win. In the singles final of Dubai Open, Roger Federar, who was world noumber two at the time defeated third seeded Andy Murray.

Shooting
A new Indian shooting star emerged in the form of Haryana's Ajay Mittal, who grabbed the gold at the National Shooting Championships for shotgun held in February 2012.

International Sports Events in February 2012



Figure skating (Four Continents Championship)
The Four Continents Championship that was held in Colorado Springs saw the winners of the two consecutive seasons, the USA's Meryl Davis and Charlie White losing to Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. The championship was a tough one, but in the end, only the best team with better performance won.

Rugby
The Six Nations Rugby Championship started from 4th February, 2012. It included nations like England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, France and Wales. It was said to be a championship that was very close as all the nations competing were equally good. The tightly contested championship was won by Wales, making it their third grand slam victory.

The Football League Cup turned out to be a great event with all the teams performing pretty well and giving each other the run for their money. The final match took place between Cardiff City and Liverpool at Wembley, London. Cardiff, on one hand appeared for the first time in the finals whereas Liverpool was appearing for the eleventh time. It was an exciting game as it went on until penalty shoot-out, when Liverpool won it over Cardiff City by 3-2.

European Top-12
The European Top-12 table tennis tournament for both men's and women's started on 4th February and ended on 5th February, 2012, in Lyon, France. The championship was a tough one. In the men's singles, the final took place between Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany and Kirill Skachkov of Russia. Dimitrij won the final by beating Kirill 4-0. In the women's singles, the match final was held between Li Jie of nethelands and Wu Jiaduo of Germany. Wu Jiaduo won the final by 4-3.
