December 19, 2019: Cummins costliest overseas player

The 2020 Indian Premier League Auction took place in Kolkata on December 19, 2019. Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins emerged as the costliest overseas player bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in a massive Rs.15.50 crores. At the same time, Piyush Chawla is the most expensive Indian player purchased by the Chennai Super Kings in Rs. 6.75 crores. Mobile manufacturer Vivo will be the sponsor of this edition. This smartphone company has got sponsorship rights for five years until 2022.

December 30, 2019: IPL kick-starts on March 29

The cash-rich cricket league will kick off on March 29, 2020, when Chennai Super Kings will lock horns with last year's champion Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The final will be held on May 24, 2020. Mumbai Indians has the distinction of winning this prestigious league maximum four times. In this edition, eight teams will rub their shoulders in a nearly two-month-long tournament.

Fantasy gaming platform Dream 11 acquired the title sponsorship for the IPL 2020 replacing the Chinese mobile company Vivo. Dream 11 became the highest bidder for the title rights, outbidding educational platforms like Unacademy and BYJU’S.

September 6, 2020: BCCI releases IPL 2020 fixtures

The BCCI has released the IPL 2020 schedule on September 6, 2020. All the eight teams will compete for the much-coveted IPL title in UAE. In the opening match, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will start the season's blockbuster proceedings. The much delayed 2020 edition of the IPL starts on September 19 without its glitz and glamour, as there would be no grand opening ceremony, in-stadium media coverage or spectators in the stadium.

All the matches in the 13th edition of IPL will be held behind closed doors, across the three venues in the United Arab Emirates. IPL which starts on September 19, 2020, will last up to November 10, 2020. The three venues for as many as 60 IPL matches are Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, and Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah. IPL, which generally starts in late March was postponed this year due to a nationwide lockdown in the wake of the COVID-19 virus. Then BCCI decided to shift the venue to the UAE.
