IPL 2022 (Indian Premier League 2022)

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) began with much fanfare on March 26, with its first match played between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) V/S Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). IPL, since its beginning in 2008, has managed to garner a lot of support itself, with some unheard of interesting Domestic players with a mix of Foreign talent that the tournament offers to its viewers.

Here is the timeline that led to the beginning of the IPL 2022.

The excitement for this season of IPL began ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to add two more new teams. New auction bids were to be drawn to re-shuffle players and let more new domestic talent show off their skills in the tournament.

February 12 and February 13 were the days assigned for the auction process to begin for all the teams. The two new teams added this season were Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.

How much was each team allowed to spend in the Auction?

The BCCI had set a cap on the 10 IPL franchises of 90 Crore; this meant that each team could only spend 90 crores in the current Auction. However, teams were allowed to retain four players, which included a maximum of 3 Indian players and one foreign player.

These retentions among the teams would cost them ₹ 42 Crore out of the 90 already allotted. However, if one group retains only one player, it would cost them 14-15 crore, but that price would not be immediately decided to be the player’s salary.

Before the beginning of the IPL, Punjab Kings decided to retain only two players from its previous squad, leaving it with the most money in its pocket as it went in for bidding. As a result, 204 players were bought out of the 600 available.

Venue for IPL 2022?

IPL 2022 is set to be played across four venues only this time, with 70 league matches and four playoffs. The tournament will be played within 65 days.

Here are the four venues that have been decided:

  • Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
  • Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai
  • DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai
  • MCA International Stadium, Pune

Brabourne Stadium and MCA International Stadium will host 15 games each. The Finals, Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2 will be held in Ahmedabad.

An IPL with a New Format?
