The month of October had lots of sporting events this year. On this page we will highlight the top stories for the month of October. In the National sports news, there were many championships and tournaments. In hockey, the Senior Women's National Championship title was retained by Railways after beating Haryana by 5-0 in the finals and the Surjit Memorial tournament title was also retained by Indian Oil after defeating Bharat Petroleum by 4-3 in the finals. In the Indian National Open Golf tournament which was held in Bangalore, Thailand's Thaworn Wiratchant won the title following a play-off. It was his 2nd victory as had earlier won in 2005.

In other Indian sports news, Saina Nehwal defeated Germany's Juliane Schenk 21-17, 21-8 to secure the prestigious Denmark Open title (Badminton) which is a Super series Premier title. However in the French Open Badminton series, Saina Nehwal lost the finals to world rank no.26 Minatsu Mitani of Japan. This was Mitani's first Super Series title and Japan's first in women's singles. In the Second Formula One Indian Grand Prix held at the Buddh International Circuit in Noida, Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel won the Grand Prix with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso finishing second and Vettel's teammate Mark Webber finished third. Ace Indian cueist Pankaj Advani won his seventh World Billiards Championship title after beating defending champion and seasoned Englishman Mike Russell in the final. It is his eighth overall world title and his seventh in billiards.

In Cricket, the Indian women's team lifted the first Asian Cricket Council's Twenty20 Asia Cup after defeating Pakistan by 18 runs. The Duleep Trophy final was won by the East Zone after defeated the Central Zone by virtue of lead in the first innings. Virat Kohli was given the Polly Umrigar Award for being India's top international cricketer in 2011-12. He was honored with a trophy and cheque of Rs.5 lakh at the Annual BCCI Awards Ceremony. Also, The Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to former captain Sunil Gavaskar which comprised of a trophy, a citation and a cheque for Rs.25 lakh.

In International news, West Indies crushed Sri Lanka by 36 runs to win the Twenty20 World Cup. This was West Indies first World Cup win since 1979. Marlon Sameuls of West Indies was declared the man of the match and Australia's Shane Watson was declared as the player of the series. In Cycling, Lance Armstrong got stripped of his seven Tour de France Titles and was declared banned for life by the International Cycling Union for being involved in doping scandal. The once symbol of perseverance in cycling, Lance Armstrong goes down in history as a dope cheat in sports. In Tennis, Leander Paes of India and Radek Stepanek his Czech partner defeated India's Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna for the doubles tennis title at the Shanghai Masters. The fourth seeds claimed a comeback victory over the seventh seeded Indian duo.
