ATHLETICS
World Championships, 2011
The IAAF World Championships were held in Daegu, South Korea.

The United States led the team tally with 12 gold and 25 medals in all. Russia was next with nine gold and 19 total, followed by Kenya with seven gold and 17 in all. Jamaica took home nine medals-four of those gold-while Germany and Great Britain & Northern Ireland each won seven medals apiece.

Several multiple medallist emerged from the championships, with Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot, who took top honors in the 5000 and 10,000m, the lone double champion.

Allyson Felix notched four medal finishes, a pair of golds in the Relays and individual silver (400m) and bronze (200m). Her compatriot Carmelita Jeter collected three, gold in the 100m, the 4x100m Relay, and silver in the 200m.

Jamaica's Yohan Blake won the world championships 100m final after red hot favourite and defending champion Usain Bolt sensationally false started. Bolt, running in lane five, went early, stunning a hugely expectant crowd in Daegu, who looked on shocked as the distraught superstar ripped off his shirt and held his head in disbelief before leaving the track.

Carmelita Jeter of the United States held off a strong field to claim gold in the women's 100m. Jeter, who won bronze at the last two world championships, was locked with defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica right through until the line.

American Brittney Reese successfully defended her world long jump title with her first and only legitimate jump of 6.82 metres. Reese was the first woman to successfully defend the world title since compatriot Jackie Joyner-Kersee in 1991 and her victory gave the United States their first medal of the championships.

In all, athletes from 41 countries took home medals.
The 2013 edition of the championships will be held in Moscow, Russia.

BADMINTON
World Championship, 2011
The 2011 championships were held in London. China's Lin Dan beat top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia to win the men's singles title for the fourth time.

The women's singles title was won by Wang Yihan of China, who beat Cheng Shao Chieh of Taipei in the finals.

Men's Double title: Cai Yun & Fu Haifeng (China)
Women's Doubles title: Wang Xiaoli & Yu Yang (China)
Mixed Doubles title: Zhang Nan & Zhao Yunfei (China)

India's Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa won the bronze medal in the women's doubles event .

The BWF World Championships is a showcase of the very best in the sport and it determines who are the World Champions in each of the five disciplines-men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles.

The first World Championships was hosted in Malmo Sweden in 1977, and a Championship was held every three years until 1983, after which, it became a biennial event. Since 2005 however, the BWF World Championships has become an annual tournament, being hosted every year except in the year of the Olympic Games.

World Championships
Indian cueist Pankaj Advani faltered in the finals once again as England's Mike Russell successfully defended his Point format title in the IBSF World Billiards Championship, played in Carlow, Ireland.

CRICKET
Sri Lanka-Australia ODI Series
Fast bowler Brett Lee and spinner Xavier Doherty took four wickets each as Australia crushed Sri Lanka by five wickets to win the fourth ODI and take an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

Sri Lanka defeated Australia by four wickets in the fifth and final ODI thus finally loosing the series 3-2. Sri Lanka pace-man Lasith Malinga took a record third hat-trick to help his team win the match.

ICC Test Team of the Year
Senior Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan earned a place in the ICC Test Team of the Year, chosen by a specially appointed selection panel headed by West Indian legend Clive Lloyd today. Four countries are represented in the 12-man line-up and Tendulkar made the side for the third year in a row, having appeared in the ICC World Test Team of the Year 2009 and 2010.

The ICC Test Team 2011 is: Alastair Cook (Eng), Hashim Amla (SA), Jonathan Trott (Eng), Sachin Tendulkar (Ind), Kumar Sangakkara (SL) (wk/captain), AB de Villiers (SA), Jacques Kallis (SA), Stuart Broad (Eng), Graeme Swann (Eng), Dale Steyn (SA), James Anderson (Eng), Zaheer Khan (Ind) (12th man).

GOLF WGC Bridgestone Invitational Australian Adam Scott held off a bold early challenge from Japanese teenager Ryo Ishikawa to clinch his eighth PGA Tour victory by four shots.

Numura Cup
India ended an 18-year medal draught with a bronze in the team championships in the Asia Pacific Golf championships for Nomura Cup, held in Fiji. India's Khalin Joshi was tied for third place in individual standings.

Australia won the cup for the record ninth time. New Zealand finished second, followed by India, South Korea and Japan.

ARCHERY
Summer Universiade, 2011
Indian archers ended India's medal drought in the 26th Summer Universiade-2011 held at Shenzen, China. The women's Compound trio of Gagandeep Kaur, Sunita Rani and Anjali defeated Mexico in a nerve-wracking match to win bronze. Gagandeep and Sunita are from Punjabi University, Patiala, while Anjali is from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

CRICKET
England-India Test Series
England defeated India by 319 runs in the second Test at Trent Bridge to lead the four-Test series 2-0. Tim Bresnan's five-wicket haul in the second innings sealed India's fate. Stuart Broad, who picked 8 wickets and also contributed with the bat was declared the man of the match.

India lost the third Test by an innings and 242 runs and with this also lost the Number one Test team ranking. This was India's third biggest Test defeat in their history, behind the innings and 336 runs defeat against West Indies in Kolkata in 1958-59 and an innings and 285 run defeat to England at Lord's in 1974.

This was also the first Test series that M.S. Dhoni lost as a Test captain.

India's reign at the number one rank lasted for a bit over 20 months. They had become No. 1 on December 6, 2009 after beating Sri Lanka.

England completed a complete whitewash by defeating India by an innings and eight runs in the fourth and final Test. This turned out to be India's worst performance in England since a 5-0 loss in 1959, With this defeat India slumped to world number 3 in Test rankings.
