The month of March 2013 observed lots of sporting events this year. We will highlight the top national and international sports stories for the month of March.

In the National sports news, an expert batting performance by the West Zone helped them win the Deodhar Trophy as they secured a comfortable 5-wicket victory over the North Zone in the finals. In the National Twenty20 cricket title, Gujarat won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Championship title after scoring a whipping 6-wicket victory over Punjab in the final clash.

In cycling, Deborah and Manorama Devi from India won a bronze medal in the team sprint event to give the India their second medal in the Hero Asian Cycling Championships at New Delhi. India also picked up two silver medals to increase their tally to four on the last day of the event. The medals were won by India's young female riders, as no male team members could win any medals. India finished at ninth position with two silver medals and two bronze medals.

In cricket, Team India received a shield and a cheque of 175,000 USD for upholding the top position in the latest ICC ODI rankings. India acquired 119 points, followed by England and Australia.

In the Santosh Trophy, Services defended the title after overwhelming the hosts Kerala by 4-3 in the penalty shootout in the finals of the National Football Championship.

In the India-Australia test series, India crushed Australia by an innings and 135 runs winning the second cricket Test and took a 2-0 lead in the four-match series. With a 6-wicket victory in the third Test, India clinched the series with a 3-0 lead. This was the first time India won more than two matches against Australia in a single series in the 81 year old test history. India achieved a historic 4-0 clean sweep against Australia.

In the New Zealand-England test series, England kept the series leveled, even as New Zealand gave their all during an exhilarating final session of Test cricket. All three test matches were draw, which means both teams will share the victory spoils. England became the third team in cricket test history to save a game, starting the final day with 4 wickets down.

In International news, world number one women tennis, player Serena Williams came back strong from a set down to defeat Maria Sharapova winning the Sony Open championship for the sixth time.

In Women's World Cup Wrestling, China won the gold medal while Mongolia came second with silver and Japan settled for bronze. For the first time, India had qualified in this eight-team event which was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. India finished in at fifth position.
