The beginning of this New Year 2013 witnessed plenty of sporting events this year. We will highlight the top national and international sports stories for the month of January.

In the National sports news, Uttrakhand defeated defending champions Punjab in the men's final while Indian Railways defeated Tamil Nadu in the women's section to retain the title for a record 10 years in a row in the National Basketball Championship.

In the National Table Tennis Championship, India's number one player, Soumyajit Ghosh, achieved the youngest National Champion title after defeating the six time winner Achanta Sharath Kamal in the finals to win the Maharaja Pitampura Cup and also got the prize money of Rupees 2.30 lakh.

In the women's title, K. Shamini achieved victory over Poulomi Ghatak in the finals winning the Travancore Cup along with prize money of Rs.1.45 lakh. Winner of Men doubles were Sourav Chakraborty and G. Sathiyan. Winner of Women doubles were K. Spoorthy and Nikhat Banu. Winner of Mixed doubles were Utkarsh Gupta and Manika Batra.

In cricket, Mumbai won their 40th Ranji Trophy title after Captain Ajit Agarkar and Dhawal Kulkarni defeated Saurshtra for an innings and 125 runs victory in the five-day final that ended in three days.

In the India-Pakistan ODI Series, India fell to defeat after a pathetic display against their arch-rivals Pakistan. In the second ODI Pakistan took a 2-0 lead thus winning the three-match series.

In the South Africa-New Zealand Test Series, South Africa defeated New Zealand by an innings and 27 runs in the first test match. South Africa then completed a crushing innings with 193 runs victory in the second Test, winning the Two Test series by 2-0.

In the India-England ODI Series, England drew first blood with a 9 run victory in the 1st match. In the 2nd match, India won the match by 127 runs leveling the five match series by 1-1. India went on to win the 3rd ODI by 7 wickets. In the 4th match, India pressed England to the brink of a series defeat and gave India a 3-1 winning lead. In the fifth match, England saved some pride by winning the 5th and final ODI by 7 wickets and thus India won the series with a lead of 3-2.

In the Australia-Sri Lanka ODI Series, Australia defeated Sri Lanka inexpensively for a 107 run victory in the 1st match of the five match series. Sri Lanka came back in the 2nd match to win it by 8 wickets and also the 3rd match by 4 wickets. The fourth match was abandoned due to rain and Australia defeated Sri Lanka by 32 runs in the final match, leveling the series by 2-2.

In International news, Lionel Messi was named the world's best player in Football for the 4th time in a row. He was handed the FIFA Ballon D'Or award at an awards ceremony in Zurich. Cristiano Ronaldo was the runner-up Andres Iniesta was third.

In the 75th Tata Steel Chess Tournament played at Wijk Aan Zee in Netherlands, Magnus Carlsen of Norway won the tournament after defeating Anish Giri of Holland. The World champion Viswanathan Anand suffered a defeat against Wang Hao of China and settled for a joint third place finish in the tournament.

In Tennis, Novak Djokovic became the first to win three successive Australian Open titles when he defeated Andy Murray in the men's singles final. In the Men's doubles title, Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan of USA defeated Robin Haase/Igor Sijsling of Netherlands and became the most successful men's pair in Grand Slam history.

In the Women's doubles title, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy won the Australian Open title defeating the Australian pair of Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua. In Mixed Doubles, wild card entrants Jarmila Gajdosova and Matthew Ebden won the title with a victory over Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak.

In the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup (Tennis), Victoria Azarenka of Belarus defeated Li Na of China and won the women's singles final match. The World number nine player Janko Tipsarevic won the ATP Chennai Open after defeating the young Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in the finals and won the title.
