SLPL 2012 Teams


The Sri Lanka Cricket board has announced the names of the players that have been drafted for the tournament. The inaugural functions began on 11th August 2012, on the Colombo stadium.
Colombo and Kandy are the two places were all the matches will be played.The local players were included in the seven franchises through a draft system. The SLC has also selected 56 foreign players to be included in the inaugural League. However the Indian Players will be conspicuously absent for the first ever Sri Lankan Premier League. England too has taken a back foot due to prior commitment. Azhar Mahmood was, nevertheless selected by the seven franchises by the draft system.

Shahid Afridi has been selected for the Negenahira, but he will not be able to participate due to commitment for the PCB, which is due from 28th August. Now Afridi will not be playing for the Negenahira, but for Ruhuna.

The SLC has declared the total number of franchises, which are 7 in all. There are in all 18 players from Australia and 13 from Pakistan. A total of 56 foreign players will be participating in the SLC. Each team should also have a player who is a Sri Lankan player, under- 21 international. There will be a total of 7 Sri Lankan players. The structure of the teams has also been formed. There will be seven provinces that will structure the teams. The names of the seven teams are Basnahira, Kandurata, Ruhuna, Uva, Nagenahira, Uthura and Wayamaba. Every team has an icon player. Basnahira has got Tilakratne Dilshan as their Icon player, Kandurata has Kumar Sangakkara, Nagenahira has Angelo Mathews, Ruhuna has Shahid Afridi, Uthura has Muttiah Muralitharan, Uva has Chris Gayle and Wayamba has Mahela Jayawardene.

Each franchise has icon players, two of whom are foreign players. There will be a total of 18 players including 6 foreign players.
